IRS Revenue Officer Turned Bank Robber Publishes “Sixty-Eight”, a Memoir

A former IRS Revenue Officer, now a professor, writes about a colorful life filled with positions of respectability, including working for a prominent human rights organization, that contrast against plenty of deviant behavior - both non-criminal (wife-swapping) to criminal (bank robberies).

Using the pen name of James Murphy to avoid embarrassing his family, the author reviews an unusual life which takes him from the college town of Urbana, Illinois to the jungles of Vietnam and the streets of cities like Memphis, Miami, San Francisco, Honolulu, Hong Kong ,Saigon,New York City, London and Washington, D.C., along with many other parts of the world. From a childhood spent filled with Sunday School and Little League baseball games to a career as a swinging bank robber, Murphy’s life is filled with many strange contrasts. Murphy stands witness to great moments in U.S. history during the 1960s and 1970s as a public servant; first, as a Inventory Management Analyst for the U.S. Army stationed in Vietnam in 1966 and later, as an Internal Revenue Officer during Martin Luther King’s assassination in Memphis, April 1968.

Although Murphy continues on to work for a prominent Human Rights Organization in London, his service to the government doesn’t keep him from flirting with the wrong side of the law as a bank robber, and ultimately lands him in both state and federal prisons. Of course, Jim Murphy being - well, Jim Murphy - ultimately ends up graduating from law school and working as a lawyer.
