Grain auger accident kills Indiana man

Occupational Health and Safety Administration alerts Indiana personal injury attorney- A Indiana man was killed in a workplace accident involving a grain auger.

Indianapolis, IN—A Fairmount man was killed after he became trapped up to his chest in a grain auger. Emergency crews rushed to Ceres Midland Grain Elevator Company in Fairmount on Thursday, October 29, 2009 around 3:15 p.m., as reported by WISH TV.

Daniel Shock, 58, was reportedly working alone when the accident occurred. Another co-worker heard Shock's panicked screams for help when he discovered him caught in the grain auger, which is a motorized machine that moves grain from trucks and carts into grain storage bins. Grant county police officials believed Shock may have tried to step across the operational grain auger, which is located on the ground level in the middle of four grain bins. Investigators stated it is unknown at this time how exactly Shock became trapped.

When emergency medical services (EMS) arrived at the scene, Shock was alert and talking. A medical helicopter arrived at the scene to transport the severely injured worker to a local hospital. Shock's injuries proved fatal before he could be taken to the hospital and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators with the Indiana Occupational Health and Safety Administration (IOSHA) http://www.in.gov/dol/iosha.htm are expected to conduct a full investigation into the fatal workplace accident.
