MEERUT: The influential Islamic seminary, Darul Uloom Deoband, has issued a ‘fatwa’ (edict) asking Muslims not to post their pictures on social media, days after suggesting that women should not trim their hair and eyebrows for “better looks”.
The seminary in Saharanpur’s Deoband town has said in a decree that Muslim men and women should not upload their photos on Facebook, WhatsApp or any other social media platform while terming it “un-Islamic”.
The fatwa was issued on October 18 by ‘Darul Iftaa’-- which issues edicts for the seminary -- in response to a query.
Several religious scholars with the seminary and elsewhere have welcomed the move.
Maulana Mohammad Sultan, president of Markaz Aulia (main religious centre) of Darul Uloom, said, “We welcome the decision and completely abide by the fatwa as it is in accordance with Islamic laws. But, at the same time, we also know that in certain circumstances, getting pictures clicked becomes necessary, like for official documents. So in these cases it is allowed. But, putting photos on social media, which is for fun, should be discouraged.”
Another religious scholar, who did not wish to be named, said, “Social media is being used to destroy age-old traditions. Anyone can speak or showcase anything on mobile phones and there is no check on that. This is wrong.
Photography is not allowed in Islam. Then, its circulation on internet should also not be allowed.”
Earlier this month, the seminary had issued a fatwa against plucking, trimming and shaping of eyebrows by women. The seminary also advised women against trimming their hair to get “better looks”.
