Re: “Offline October: Littleton students organize social media blackout after teen suicides,” Oct. 13 news story.
More and more, I find most of us are unhealthily consumed with clicks, notifications and likes on our social media channels. Frankly, it’s gotten scary how we lean on the apps on our cellular devices like they’re our latest addiction. But reading that teens are putting their social media aside for the month of October is truly inspiring. As a millennial who writes often about my age group, I must admit that the generation below me — now being dubbed the “centennials” — seems to clearly understand the harms of social media and the importance of getting out from behind our smartphones to interact in non-digital ways. I think Offline October is something all of us can and should learn from. Let’s remind ourselves to set down our phones and shut off Facebook from time to time so we can enjoy the present.
