Closure: MAPOLY students take protest to social media

Sodiq Oyeleke

Some students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, have expressed concern over the continued closure of the institution, following its recent upgrading to university status.

The students, who had earlier in October protested the uncertainty surrounding their diploma programmes, decided to take their case to the social media.

Posting on various social media platforms recently, they complained that, despite Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s promise to resolve the issues at stake, the final year students of the institution, who were expected to participate in the National Youth Service Corps Scheme, had not been attended to.

The students also lamented the conversion of Mapoly to a university, claiming that it was the factor that triggered the crisis, which led to the suspension of academic activities in the institution.

Investigation showed that the Mapoly Press Club started the social media campaign via the hashtag, #SaveMapoly.

Commenting online, many students of the institution said they preferred a peaceful polytechnic to a “crises-dominated” university.

One of the students, identified as Kehinde, wrote, “@Govsia please save our future. We are tired of staying at home. Take MAUSTECH to ipokia #SaveMapoly.”

Tweeting as @Olatubosun15, another student wrote, “It’s been over two years since I gained admission to the great citadel of learning, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, for a two-year National Diploma Programme. Do they want us to do ND3 ni? #SaveMapoly.”

In other tweets, the students pleaded that the reopening of the institution should not be delayed. Some of their tweets read, “@delemomodu @rotimipaseda @bukolasaraki @benmurraybruce, don’t let us resort to stealing on the streets, yahoo yahoo and drugs. All we want is quality education in MAPOLY #SaveMAPOLY.”

“Are we going to watch the APC repeat another LAUTECH with MAPOLY? This is not an upgrade, you are killing MAPOLY! Our future is at stake! #saveMapoly @NGRPresident @NGRSenate.

“While our counterparts in other schools are preparing for NYSC, MAPOLY final year students have been forced to watch gloomily as they await the winner of the SIA vs ASUP fight. Toying with the lives and careers of thousands is insensitive and barbaric. #SaveMapoly.”
