Estonia reaches agreement on new rules concerning EU cross-border parcel delivery
"We are happy to announce that a provisional deal on parcel delivery
has been reached with the European Parliament. Thank you all, who helped us get
there," Clyde Kull, deputy head of the Estonian representation to the
EU, said on social media.
The agreement was reached at a trilogue meeting of the Council of
the EU, European Commission and the European Parliament held in
Strasbourg, where the plenary session of the European Parliament is underway.
Estonia as the presidency will head the Council of the EU until January.
The new rules will make the cross-border parcel delivery tariffs more
transparent and give regulators more powers to monitor the cross-border parcel
delivery market, it is said on the Estonian EU presidency website.
More transparent cross-border
delivery rates will encourage consumers to choose from a
wider range of products and to buy more online. They will
also offer new possibilities for retailers, especially for small businesses which do
not have the bargaining power to negotiate better rates.
This is an important achievement for the Estonian EU presidency in
launching a common digital market. Minister of Entrepreneurship Urve Palo said in October that Estonia
during the presidency is hoping to agree with the European Parliament on
abolishing geoblocking, the Audiovisual Media Services Directive and parcel
delivery regulation.
Abolishing geoblocking was agreed on in November, but an agreement
concerning the Audiovisual Media Services Directive has not been reached yet.
