Serbian Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic said on Tuesday that the authorities have arrested four people who allegedly attacked the two Kosovo Albanians in Novi Sad at the weekend.

“After an intensive… investigation, the police identified all the attackers who attacked two young men and arrested four people suspected of this crime,” Stefanovic told journalists, Blic newspaper reported.

“The clothes that the suspects wore on Sunday morning during the attack were also found, which is important for the continuation of the investigation,” he added.

The two 19-year-old Albanians were attacked early on Sunday morning in Novi Sad. One of them is still fighting for his life in a local hospital.

Serbian media reported that the incident was ethically motivated and that the Albanians were attacked because they spoke their own language, although Stefanovic expressed doubt about this.

“Although the investigation so far, including interviews with suspects, but also with one of the injured, indicates that this incident was not instigated on a national [ethnic] basis, the police will examine all the allegations in detail and come to the full truth,” he said.

The incident was widely condemned by both Serbian and Kosovo officials and by human rights NGOs.
