82 Year Old Boat Helps San Francisco's Matt Brooks Win Dollars For Leukemia Charity

Everybody loves a happy ending but when the main characters are a thrill seeking entrepreneur (San Francisco based Matt Brooks) and his 82 year old boat winning a regatta for charity, you know the story has to be special.

/EINPresswire.com/SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- Ordinary 82 year olds don't often win races, but then Dorade is is no ordinary 82 year old. The legendary boat owned by Matt Brooks of San Francisco added yet another feather to her cap by winning the San Francisco Leukemia Cup Regatta on October 21st.

Dorade is the stuff sailors' dreams are made of; and as the 15th owner of this magnificent vessel, Brooks has done everything possible to carve out a place for her in sailing history. Purchased in 2010, he has not only restored the octogenarian ship, but turned her into a boat worthy of competing in ocean races against the 21st century "youngsters."

"An 82 year old sailing boat is ancient history by most people's standards. But Dorade isn't a boat that goes by anyone else's standards. From her early days, she is used to being underestimated and written off as "fragile" but she always fights back. Winning this Regatta just goes to show how wrong a lot of people were about her - especially in the early years," said Matt Brooks, San Francisco based sailing enthusiast and professional mountaineer (http://brooks-range.com/).

Dorade's owner has a life as prolific as her own. Perhaps this is what drew the two together? San Francisco's Matt Brooks is well known in mountaineering circles for his valuable contributions to alpinists and mountain guides. He was honored for his efforts earlier this year by being awarded the American Mountain Guides Association's Lifetime Achievement Award. Brooks' passion for mountaineering has also turned into a lucrative business through the creation of Brooks-Range Mountaineering Equipment Co. Additionally, Brooks is also the CEO of a regional private REIT (real estate investment trust), one of the 10 largest in the San Francisco Bay Area according to the San Francisco Business Times with holdings in the five western states.

Brooks seeks adventure wherever he goes so it's not surprising that he is also a keen sailor. Dorade is his pride and joy, but the beautifully restored Lucie is just as special; having won him two world championships at the 2011 World Cup and the 2012 European championship.

Competing in and winning the San Francisco Leukemia Cup Regatta helped Dorade and her owner raise over $60,000 for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). Going forward, with the help of a first class crew of sailors, Brooks plans to enter his magnificent ship in all of the races in which she won trophies in her early years. The legend of Dorade continues.
