Letter: It's time for Burgum to be the leader we thought we elected

Gov. Burgum, it is time to act. Issue a mandate for mask wearing and attach fines to all violators. It will make a difference.

As reported by Tess Williams of the Grand Forks Herald on Aug. 29, 2018, North Dakota ranks third in the nation for states with the most impaired driving deaths per capita. Half of the 113 motor vehicle deaths in 2016 involved alcohol. We have laws called DUI and DWI. These laws have consequences. I do not hear people crying that they interfere with their personal rights to drink and drive.

As of Sept. 18, 2020, we have 184 total deaths related to COVID-19. In six months, we have over three times more deaths than are related to alcohol automobile deaths in 2016. People will not wear masks because it interferes with their personal freedom. How many people have to die before we do the right thing? Will it be 200, 500, 1,000? Consequences do alter behavior. It was proven with traffic deaths, be it seat belt or DUI laws.

Gov. Burgum, it is time to act. Issue a mandate for mask wearing and attach fines to all violators. It will make a difference. You were elected to serve all North Dakotans. Be the leader we thought we elected.
