GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Boston College goalkeeper Jonna Kennedy has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year and leads the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team announced Monday.
Kennedy, the ACC Defensive Player of the Year and the NFHCA Northeast Region Player of the Year, led a season-closing stretch run in which the Eagles won seven of nine matches. The Watertown, Massachusetts, native finished with a 1.76 goals-against average and an ACC-leading .794 save percentage. She had 81 saves on the year and led the conference with 6.75 saves per game while posting three shutouts.
Kennedy's best game of the year came in a 2-1 win over Syracuse on April 10, in which she made 21 saves on 22 shots to earn NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time during the 2020-21 season. The applied psychology major earned Dean’s List honors for the spring of 2021 and is on track to be named to the ACC Honor Roll for the second consecutive year.
Each of the ACC’s seven field hockey programs are represented on the 2020-21 All-ACC Field Hockey Academic Team. That includes 19 student-athletes that were voted to the All-ACC team, which is a league record. In addition, 18 players earning All-ACC academic honors this season were also named All-Region by the NFHCA.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
