Trump releases FBI documents on Russia investigation

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has ordered the full declassification of FBI files related to the agency’s investigation into his 2016 election campaign and alleged ties to Russia.

The probe, known as ‘Crossfire Hurricane,’ was launched in July 2016 to examine whether Trump or his campaign coordinated with Moscow to influence the election. The investigation was based on the controversial Steele Dossier, a collection of unverified claims about Trump’s alleged Russia connections, compiled by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele and reportedly funded by Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

In a memorandum issued on Tuesday, the White House directed the Attorney General to make the documents publicly available “immediately.”

The Crossfire Hurricane investigation later led to Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s Russiagate inquiry, which ultimately found no evidence of collusion between Trump and Russia. In 2023, a separate review by Special Counsel John Durham concluded that the FBI and Justice Department had relied on biased information and failed to uphold proper investigative standards. Durham accused the FBI of lacking “analytical rigor,” particularly in its use of politically motivated sources.

It was also revealed that the FBI used the Steele Dossier to obtain court approval to surveil Trump’s campaign. A 2019 report by Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz found that the agency had committed “serious errors” in its warrant applications.

The Crossfire Hurricane and Russiagate investigations fueled persistent media speculation about Trump’s alleged Russian ties throughout his presidency, despite Mueller’s findings to the contrary.

In a video posted on Truth Social after signing the declassification order, Trump called the investigation “total weaponization” and a “disgrace,” adding, “Now you’ll be able to see for yourselves.” Speaking to journalists, he remarked, “You probably won’t bother because you’re not going to like what you see.”

Trump had previously attempted to declassify the documents during the final days of his first term, but they were never released. According to a 2023 CNN report, a binder containing highly classified materials later went missing.
