RAF Typhoons deploy to Poland alongside Swedish Gripens to protect Nato airspace

Watch: RAF Typhoons deploy to Poland alongside Swedish Gripens

Typhoons from RAF Lossiemouth have deployed to Poland to help protect the airspace on Nato's eastern flank.

The aircraft from II (AC) Squadron have been joined by Gripen fighter jets from the Swedish Air Force.

It is the first time that Sweden has deployed combat aircraft abroad since joining the alliance in 2024.

The Ministry of Defence said they will patrol the skies over the country as part of an "enhanced air policing mission".

Defence minister Lord Coaker said: "The UK is unshakeable in its commitment to Nato.

"With threats increasing and growing Russian aggression, it is vital that we stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies.

"This latest air policing mission in Poland displays the UK's ability to operate effectively with Nato's newest member in Sweden and deter our common adversaries across the alliance’s airspace, keeping us secure at home and strong abroad."

Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson said: "For the first time ever, Sweden is deploying combat aircraft abroad on the Nato enhanced air policing mission.

"This mission is a strong demonstration of cohesion and solidarity among allies and a powerful deterrent against Russian aggression.

"We are proud that it is our first-ever policing mission and, in space here in Poland, and we're also proud to be doing it together with the United Kingdom.

"Our three countries, Sweden, Poland and United Kingdom, should have a unity of mission and a unity of purpose.

"We shared our reading when it comes to making sure that Russia can be aggressive.

"We share the importance of having a strong transatlantic link and keeping Nato strong so there's a strong unity of purpose between our two countries and we have deep and trusted defence relations."
