Julie rose to fame back in 1966 when she joined the cast of Coronation Street. She played Bet Lynch for almost three decades, with her stint running from 1966 to 1995. On the soap, Julie was the barmaid and landlady of Rovers Return Inn. Her iconic role shot her to prominence as fans were in awe of her character.

Julie's first marriage was back in 1959 when she was just 17 years old. Julie tied the knot with Ray Sutcliffe. In a Mirror Opinion column written two decades ago, Julie revealed that it was a 'marriage made in hell'. She said: "Ray Sutcliffe was a trainee draughtsman at Avro, an aviation company where I got my first job. With his dark quiff and large tortoiseshell glasses, he looked like Buddy Holly. I can't remember how many dates we went on before I lost my virginity. I was only 17.

"Ray's parents must have been on holiday because, after dinner, we went back to his house. That night I lost my virginity and, bingo, got pregnant.

"I didn't connect the early morning sickness with anything other than a bug at first, until my mother sat me down and exclaimed: 'Now look what you've done. Your father will go mad.'"

Julie added: "To be unmarried and having a baby then was such a social stigma. In an attempt to avoid the shotgun wedding, I was put into a scalding bath and made to drink a bottle of gin. It didn't work. The wedding in September 1959 was a downbeat affair, and the next year 27-year-old Ray left for Australia. I divorced him on grounds of desertion and our son Gary, now 46, never received a letter, birthday or Christmas card from his father."

The pair ended their marriage in 1963 with Julie taking a decade off before she'd wed again. Julie married Tony Rudman in 1973 but it was annulled after it barely lasted past the reception. The former Corrie legend discovered that Tony was gay during their nuptials.

"At the reception he went off with his best man," Julie said during an appearance on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs. The actress also admitted that she has no resentment towards the late Rony.

A decade later, Julie, who came out as bisexual, entered into a romantic relationship with her personal assistant Janet Ross. Julie and Janet's relationship later ended and Janet moved out after Julie started dating cabbie Duncan Ford, who left his wife and son for her. Janet died of cancer in 2012.

Julie described Janet as her soulmate on ITV's Life Stories. “She and I became soulmates,” Julie said. “I don’t know if you’ve ever found that? I hadn’t, before or since. When my mother came to the last three months of her life, Janet Ross was like a rock. You don’t often find mates like that. Incredible."

In 1985, a few years after her relationship with Janet, Julie married airline executive Richard Skrob but the long-distance relationship – he stayed at home in the US – ended after just 21 months. It was in 2007 that Julie tied the knot with Scott, who she's been with ever since.

Scott was immediately taken by the larger-than-life actress, and proposed to her every day for 11 years before winning her over.

Describing how determined he was to win her over, Julie joked: “Emotional blackmail. He said, ‘You do realise, if you don’t marry me, I’ll never be married. Because I’ll never meet anybody who would ever match up to you."

On Life Stories, while speaking to Piers Morgan., Julie described Scott as "the best of a bad bunch." She moaned that Scott only ever does half of a job but concedes that “half’s better than nothing”, adding: “I might renew his contract. He’s been the best of a bad bunch, he really has.” Now retied, Julie is being looked after by Scott in their Lancashire home.
