First responders in a southern Kentucky county performed about five or six water rescues Thursday afternoon and overnight. Casey County Emergency Management Director Rick Wesley said the Liberty-Casey County Rescue Squad’s efforts were more dramatic after dark.
“One of the water rescues was due to the fact that the guy drove around the barricade and went on up 127 where the water was over the road.”
Wesley said there are no reports of injuries from the rescues. With rain expected to continue over the weekend, he said he’s concerned about motorists not paying attention to high water signs and flashing lights.
“The risks are great when you drive through a covered roadway with water, because, you know, it doesn't take very much water to sweep a vehicle off the road.”
Wesley said the Campbellsville National Guard Armory loaned a high-profile vehicle for the efforts. As for the rest of the weekend, he hopes drivers remember that life-saving motto – “Turn around, don’t drown.”
