Digby majored in journalism news and information and graduated in 2013

ATHENS, OH– As sports director at the ABC/FOX affiliate in Dayton, Ohio, Matt Digby gets to cover everything he’s ever dreamed of. From the National Football League and Major League Baseball to college and high school sports, as well as everything in between, Digby says Dayton is a great place to have landed his dream job.

“It’s a great spot because we cover the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals, as well as Ohio State, the University of Cincinnati, Xavier, the University of Dayton, Wright State and the Dayton Dragons minor league team, as well as high school coverage,” said Digby.

Digby’s road to Dayton started in Columbus. In high school, Digby knew he wanted to study journalism and chose to attend Ohio University.

“I knew Ohio University was the best fit especially when I heard about the opportunities available at WOUB,” said Digby. “I started working at the station at the beginning of my freshman year.”

When Digby started at WOUB, he was interested in both news and sports. But eventually he realized that sports journalism was his true passion.

“The summer between my junior and senior year, I did an internship WSYX TV in Columbus in the news department and that is where I figured out that I truly enjoyed sports much more than news.”

During his time at WOUB, Digby did news and sports reporting for radio and television. He worked on WOUB TV’s night newscast, NewsWatch and the high school football program, Gridiron Glory. He also interned during the fall of senior year again with WSYX and helped out with the production of The Football Fever, covering OSU Buckeye football.

“Helping out with NewsWatch really helped me into my current position right now,” said Digby, “Many of the lessons I learned then I still apply to my work today.”

All that experience gave Digby the tools he needed to enter sports journalism after graduating in 2013.

“After graduation, I worked as a freelance sportscaster, doing play-by-play commentary for various events around the country,” said Digby. “Then I started working at WOAY-TV in West Virginia, where I worked as weekend sports anchor and eventually sports director. I had the chance to cover not just the Mountaineers, but also Marshall and Virginia Tech, along with a local PGA Tour stop for several years.”

About two years ago, Digby came to Dayton as a sports multimedia journalist and was later promoted to sports director. He says he is thankful for the hands-on experience he was able to gain at a professional station while he was in college.

“WOUB has been hugely instrumental because it gave me something to build on,” said Digby. “I didn’t have to wait until my junior or senior year to get on the air. I got started during the first quarter of freshman year, which was awesome.”
