Former Real Madrid and Netherlands coach Leo Beenhakker passes away at 82

Leo Beenhakker led Ajax to the Eredivisie title in the 1979-80 and 1989-90 seasons before he won the Dutch top-flight again with Feyennord in 1998-99.

New Delhi: The Spanish club confirmed on Thursday that the ex-Real Madrid coach Leo Beenhakker died at the age of 82. The Dutchman had a long and successful career in football management, having coached several top clubs and national teams during his lifetime. Not just that, he made a name for himself in the Netherlands as well by guiding Ajax Amsterdam to Eredivisie titles in the 1979-80 and 1989-90 seasons.

Later, he also won the Dutch league with Feyenoord in the 1998-99 campaign, showcasing his ability to deliver success across different teams. While his achievements in Dutch football were impressive, Beenhakker’s most successful spell came during his time at Real Madrid. The Dutchman managed the Spanish giants between 1986 and 1989 and had a short return in 1992.

During his tenure at Santiago Bernabeu, he led the team to three La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey, and two Supercopa de Espana trophies, marking one of the most dominant periods for the club.

Real Madrid shared a heartfelt message following his passing. “Real Madrid, its president and board of directors, are deeply saddened by the death of Leo Beenhakker, the legendary Real Madrid coach who led the Whites between 1986 and 1989 and in 1992,” the club said in an official statement.

“Real Madrid would like to express their condolences and affection to his family, clubs, and loved ones,” they added.

“Leo Beenhakker has passed away at the age of 82. Real Madrid extends its condolences to all Madridistas. May he rest in peace.”

Beenhakker’s legacy

Apart from club football, Beenhakker also managed several national teams. He coached Saudi Arabia, Poland and even took charge of Trinidad and Tobago, helping them qualify for their first-ever FIFA World Cup in 2006. Beenhakker was the mastermind behind the iconic African Eagles and was responsible for catapulting two of the greatest emblems of contemporary Americanism.

Beenhakker will be remembered as a respected figure in world football, known for his tactical intelligence and leadership. Ajax also defined him as one of the most colourful and successful Dutch managers in history.
