Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – Renowned Sierra Leonean rapper and media personality, Natasha Beckley, popularly known as Tasha, has called on local entertainers, content creators, and social media influencers to recognize and respect the value of their work.
Tasha’s remarks follow growing controversy surrounding the alleged payment of $52,000 to Nigerian social media influencer, Jarvis, who was recently invited to Sierra Leone as part of a youth empowerment initiative. The claims, which sparked backlash from several local content creators online, suggested that the money was spent to bring Jarvis into the country to inspire young Sierra Leoneans in the digital space.
However, organizers of the Gbamgbaode Festival, who hosted the visit, have firmly denied the figure, describing the reports as “false and misleading.” According to the festival team, the initiative — including its nationwide school tour — is part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program, aimed at empowering students with skills in digital innovation, creative thinking, and social media influence.
Amid the heated online debate, Tasha took to her social media platforms to address the issue candidly. She said the reactions from some Sierra Leoneans — including fellow entertainers — were not surprising, pointing out that it is a recurring issue in the country’s entertainment industry.
“Even as a Sierra Leonean, I’ve faced attempts to undermine my brand,” she said. “People have gone behind the scenes to discourage show organizers from working with me as a host. So if this happens to me, it’s no surprise that a foreign guest would face similar scrutiny.”
While refraining from directly defending the financial decisions made regarding Jarvis’ visit, Tasha emphasized that it is ultimately up to organizers to determine how they spend their money. “That’s what they wanted to do, and that’s where they see value for their investment,” she stated.
Her core message, however, was one of self-worth. Tasha encouraged Sierra Leonean creatives to focus on building their personal brands and to have a clear understanding of the value they bring to the table. She urged industry stakeholders to foster unity and professionalism instead of tearing one another down.
“Let’s shift the narrative,” she said. “Know your worth, and support others in their journey.” MJB/12/4/2025
