Journalism, AI, and building a better future: Lessons from local innovator Julian Guthrie

COEUR d'ALENE — From covering complex global stories to founding a cutting-edge AI startup from her North Idaho base, Julian Guthrie's career is a masterclass in adaptation, integrity and vision. A Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist and bestselling author, she now leads Alphy, a tech company backed by major investors like Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott and Jim Goetz (early backer of WhatsApp and GitHub). Alphy aims to reshape digital communication, and Guthrie's path offers invaluable insights for anyone looking to make an impact.

Her journey underscores several powerful lessons:

Lesson 1: Approach the world with rigorous objectivity and empathy. Guthrie's two decades at the San Francisco Chronicle were defined by a relentless pursuit of truth. The newsroom ethos demanded it: "It was really ... 'Guthrie, keep your opinion out of this ... Go and get the story, report the hell out of it and write it up with both sides presented.' And that was the norm," she recalled. Crucial to this was challenging her own biases. "Don't go in with a preconceived idea about what this person is, who this person is, whether it's a gang leader from the Mexican mafia who I did a series on, or whether it's a Larry Ellison, or whether it's some of the women I wrote about in the book 'Alpha Girls,'" Guthrie stated. This discipline wasn't just about accuracy; it was fundamental to developing the deep empathy needed to truly understand and convey complex human stories.

Lesson 2: Embrace constant, incremental improvement to achieve big goals. Learning from the best was part of Guthrie's process. She credits Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison with teaching her the powerful principle of 'Kaizen.' "He told me about ... K-A-I-Z-E-N ... the Japanese principle of kind of assiduous, constant incremental gains," Guthrie recalled. 'It's one step every day.'" This philosophy — that monumental tasks are achieved through consistent, daily progress — underpins her determined approach, whether tackling a complex book or building a technology company from the ground up.

Lesson 3: Recognize and harness the profound power of language. Guthrie's deep understanding of words extends beyond journalism. While working on her bestseller "Alpha Girls," she noticed a critical pattern: Successful women often inadvertently used diminishing language, undermining their own authority. "I realized that there are these language patterns that set us forward or set us back," Guthrie explained. This crucial insight became the seed for Alphy. She saw how language could subtly shape perception and confidence, both positively and negatively.

Lesson 4: Have the courage to pivot when faced with change or a new calling. Even with an acclaimed career, Guthrie recognized when change was needed. Witnessing the media landscape shift towards superficial clickbait — "less emphasis on the quality of the story" — and feeling she'd explored the bounds of her role, she knew it was time for something new. This awareness, combined with the powerful realization from her "Alpha Girls" research, gave her the conviction to transition from chronicling innovation to driving it herself by founding Alphy.

Lesson 5: Listen deeply to understand and connect. Effective communication isn't just about speaking; it's fundamentally about listening. Guthrie emphasizes this simple but profound truth: "You know, have two ears in one mouth because we're supposed to listen more than we talk," she urged. This principle, vital for a journalist, is equally crucial for building technology meant to improve human interaction and for fostering genuine connection in any field.
