The first movie was directed by Slovak-Canadian film producer and director Ivan Reitman.

And, keeping things close to home, it was revealed that the upcoming sequel will be directed by none other than Ivan's son; Jason Reitman.

Confirming the news on Twitter on Tuesday, Jason wrote: 'Finally got the keys to the car. #GB20.'

While many people revealed that they were delighted to hear the news of another Ghostbusters movie, which is set to hit the big screen in 2020, others weren't as impressed.

Some Twitter users revealed that they don't think anything could live up to the original Ghostbusters.

One user @stunnin_steve82 wrote: 'No matter how many times they try to remake Ghostbusters it won't be the same as the original.'

Another user @BJMendelson added: 'I wish they had left things alone after Ghostbusters one.'

It was revealed that the upcoming movie will be set in the same universe in which the original movie is set, and not the same as the world in the 2016 all-female reboot.

Some people interpreted this as a reaction to the negative feedback and backlash received by Ghostbusters: Answer The Call, which starred a number of actors including Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon.

One Twitter user @TheEricGoldman wrote: 'I’m totally fine with there being a new Ghostbusters movie set in the original universe - I just hate that the worst people will take credit for “winning” because they were so against the idea of female Ghostbusters. Sigh.'

Conflict: Several people on Twitter were disappointed that the 2020 movie will be based in the same universe as the original movies and not that of the most recent 2016 all-female reboot

Another user under the name @tonygoldmark added: 'Boy, I can't wait for all the "I'm not sexist, I just hate unnecessary reboots!" people to get frothing-at-the-mouth angry at THIS unnecessary Ghostbusters reboot too.

'Any second now. Hello?' he added.

Twitter user @socialjanice wrote: 'So instead of a sequel to the fantastic and wildly successful all female #Ghostbusters reboot we get a movie set in the original boring universe that will probably have an all male cast.'

He added: 'The fact there is no sequel to it speaks for itself.'

Meanwhile, some Ghostbusters fanatics were simply delighted at the prospect of a new movie.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Jason Reitman said: 'I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set.

'I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans.

'This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day,' he added.

Speaking about the 2016 all-female reboot, which was directed by Paul Feig, Jason said: 'I have so much respect for what Paul created with those brilliant actresses, and would love to see more stories from them.

'However, this new movie will follow the trajectory of the original film,' he said.

The original 1884 movie follows a team of scientists who lose their positions at a New York's Columbia University, and decide become 'Ghostbusters'.

The film starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Harold Ramis, who passed away in 2014.

In 1989, a sequel to the movie was released, which featured the same original members.

The trailer, which was released in March 2016 and uploaded to YouTube, received over one million negative votes before the movie was even released.

It is unclear whether or not any of the original cast will appear in the 2020 sequel.

None of the original members have spoken publicly about the Ghostbusters sequel, leaving fans wondering if they will make an appearance in the new movie.
