Amid flying stones and sounds of gunshots fired in response, falling and standing up again, an unknown "peacemaker" keeps appealing to both sides in Bethlehem.

Footage shot by journalists covering the Palestinian-Israeli conflict has shown an unarmed unidentified elderly woman, trying to convince both Israel's military forces and Palestinians, protesting in Bethlehem against the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and to transfer the embassy there, to stop fighting.

On December 15, dozens of people took to the streets in Bethlehem, as well as other cities across the country, to protest Washington's move, holding banners denouncing US president Donald Trump and chanting slogans calling Jerusalem the capital of Palestine. The clashes with Israeli forces, which followed the protests, claimed the lives of at least six Palestinians, with more than 1,900 reported wounded.

The US decision on Jerusalem sparked strong criticism among Muslim communities across the world. The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), comprising representatives of 57 Muslim countries, has recently gathered in Istanbul for an extraordinary summit to address the issue and declaring East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is currently chairing the organization, on Friday reportedly expressed his readiness to appeal to the UN in a bid to try to cancel Washington's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, calling Israel a "terrorist state that kills children."

The conflict dates back to 1967 when Israel seized then Jordanian-controlled East Jerusalem during the Six-Day War. In 1980, the Israeli Parliament adopted the Jerusalem Law, proclaiming the city as the "complete and united" capital of the country.

The international community does not recognize the annexation and considers the status of the city to be one of the core problems of the Middle East conflict, which should be resolved on the basis of an agreement with the Palestinians, who claim the eastern part of Jerusalem. For this reason, all foreign embassies are located in Tel Aviv.
