BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — A Rhode Island little league baseball team is headed to the big game.
The Coventry Little League team is going to the Little League World Series after beating their Massachusetts rivals 3-2 Sunday to win the New England Regional Championship.
The team had previously lost to Pittsfield, Massachusetts 9-1. The score was tied 2-2 Sunday going into the fourth inning, but the team pulled away with Jake Mather’s solo home run in the fifth inning.
Coventry is the fourth Rhode Island team in five years to win the New England Regional title.
Team manager Lou Simon tells The Providence Journal the boys “battled like they’ve done all summer.”
They face a Houston team Thursday in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
