Victoria Derbyshire has just joined a lengthy list of presenters who have made the embarrassing mistake of calling Jeremy Hunt the c-word live on air.

The presenter called the Foreign Secretary ‘Jeremy C***’ on her weekday news and current affairs programme, during a four-way debate with Conservative MPs discussing who they will be backing in the Tory leadership race.

Ms Derbyshire, who appears shocked at her slip up, goes on to apologise profusely before insisting ‘it’s usually men who say that’.

She says: ‘Steve Brine, you say that the man that you’re backing – Jeremy C***.

‘I’m so sorry, Jeremy Hunt.

‘I’ve never said that before in my life, it’s usually men who say that so I really really want to apologise, I’m sorry.’

The presenter attempts to swiftly move on, adding: ‘Erm, you say he is the right man to negotiate some kind of withdrawal deal and get it through Parliament…’

Ms Derbyshire made the blunder while sitting with Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski, South Leicestershire MP Alberto Costa, Winchester MP Steve Brine and Cheadle MP Mary Robinson, who joined the debate via video link.

The BBC’s subtitle service managed to avoid further embarrassment by substituting the word with ‘EXPLETIVE’.

It is not the first time a presenter has made the mistake of swapping the first letter of the cabinet minister’s surname and replacing it with a ‘c’, which has caught on as somewhat of an unfortunate nickname.

James Naughtie made the error when Mr Hunt was culture secretary, while Justin Webb tripped up when the minister was health and social care secretary.

Twitter users have taken to the platform to express their amusement at the blunder, with many calling it a ‘Freudian slip’.

Another wrote: ‘Oh my god!! My day, week, month has just been made! She actually said Jeremy C***!’

One said: ‘Yesssss. We’re only 26 minutes in and someone has dropped the Jeremy Hunt – Jeremy C*** line already #toryleadership.’

The comments come as Tory MPs have until 5pm on Monday to enter the leadership race to become party leader and prime minister.

Jeremy Hunt is one of 11 attempting to take Theresa May’s spot, after she stepped down from the position on June 7.
