Editorial cartoons for April 28, 2024: Campus protests, Trump trial, Supreme Court

Protests over the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza swept college campuses across the country, prompting arrests, canceled classes and calls for college leaders to step down. Leading the gallery is Bill Bramhall’s sendup of student protesters camping out in tents while a homeless person lacks shelter beyond the university’s gates.

Other takes on the student protests include Joel Pett on the futility of student demands; Phil Hands on interpreting anti-war sentiment as antisemitic; Dana Summers on the role of professors in ginning up antisemitism; and Nick Anderson comparing the violence to Jan. 6.

Testimony began in the criminal trial of former President Donald Trump. Cartoonists commented on Trump’s inattention at the witness table; National Enquirer former editor David Pecker’s favorable gloss on Trump news; and President Joe Biden’s annoyance at the media’s obsession with Trump at his expense.

Other news items in this week’s gallery include Supreme Court arguments over Idaho’s ban on emergency abortions and a Colorado town’s fines on homeless people; final passage of a U.S. aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, after six months of delay; inflation’s bite on consumers; a New York appeals court’s decision to overturn the rape conviction of former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein; and the large pay disparity between the NBA and WNBA.

Cartoons were drawn by Jack Ohman, Nick Anderson, Bill Bramhall, Dana Summers, Drew Sheneman, Walt Handelsman, David Horsey, Phil Hands, Joel Pett and Joey Weatherford of Tribune Content Agency; and Mike Luckovich, Steve Breen and Michael Ramirez of Creators Syndicate.
